Why it matters
Website speed optimization keeps your visitors on the page. Every second counts on a phone.
A visitor taps your link on a phone, on mobile data, between two other things. When the page appears right away, they read on. When it hangs, they go back to the search results.
Website speed optimization is the work of making pages appear fast, respond fast and stay stable while loading. It serves your visitors first and your rankings second.
Google's Search Central documentation confirms that Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems. Relevance still comes first, and among comparable pages a good page experience helps.

The numbers
The three numbers Google uses to judge speed.
Google measures page experience with three Core Web Vitals. According to web.dev, Google's documentation for developers, a page passes when 75 percent of real visits meet these values.
| Core Web Vital | What it measures | Good value |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | How soon the largest element on screen is visible | 2.5 seconds or less |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How quickly the page responds to a tap or click | 200 milliseconds or less |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much the layout jumps while loading | 0.1 or less |
PageSpeed Insights, Google's free test, shows two kinds of data. Field data comes from real Chrome users over the past 28 days. Lab data is a simulated test on a mid-range phone. Field data is what counts for search.

Test it yourself
How to check whether you need a slow website fix.
Before you pay for a slow website fix, measure. This takes five minutes.
- Run PageSpeed InsightsGo to pagespeed.web.dev, enter your homepage and look at the mobile tab first.
- Read the field dataCheck whether LCP, INP and CLS are green. Small sites sometimes lack field data, and then the lab score is your guide.
- Test your money pagesRepeat the test for your main service page and your contact or booking page.
- Open the site on your own phoneSwitch off Wi-Fi and load the page on mobile data. Count how long it takes before you can read and tap.
Search Console, Google's free dashboard for site owners, has a Core Web Vitals report that groups all your pages into good, needs improvement and poor.
The causes
What usually slows a website down.
Most slow sites share the same handful of causes. Knowing them helps you judge any quote.
- Heavy imagesA photo straight from a camera is many times larger than a screen needs. Images are the most common cause of a slow first view.
- Too much JavaScriptPage builders, plugins and tracking scripts load code the visitor has to download and run before the page reacts.
- Stacked plugins and appsEach add-on on WordPress or Shopify brings its own files. Twenty add-ons mean twenty sets of files.
- Slow hostingA crowded shared server takes long to send the first byte, and everything else waits for it.
- Fonts and embedsCustom fonts, video players, maps and chat widgets from other servers each add a connection and a delay.
The fixes
How we improve page speed.
To improve page speed we work through the same list on every build, in order of impact.
- Modern image formatsWe serve images as AVIF or WebP in several widths, so a phone downloads a small file and a large screen a sharp one.
- The first screen firstThe main image and the text above the fold load with priority. Everything further down loads as the visitor scrolls.
- Lean codeWe write the code by hand and ship only what the page uses. Scripts run after the first view.
- Reserved spaceImages, videos and banners get fixed dimensions, so the layout stays still while loading.
- Fonts from our own serverFonts are hosted with the site and preloaded, which saves connections to other servers.
- Fast hosting and cachingPages are prepared in advance and cached, so the server answers at once.
Patch or rebuild
Speed up my website, or build it new?
Many owners ask us: can you speed up my website as it is? Sometimes a patch is enough. Compressing images and removing unused plugins can lift a site a good way.
Often the cause sits in the foundation: a heavy theme, a page builder or a stack of apps. Then each fix fights the platform, and the gains fade with the next update.
We chose the second route. We build on our own platform with hand-written code, so speed is part of the foundation. You see the result first and decide afterwards.
What to ask
What a website speed optimization service should deliver.
Comparing offers for a website speed optimization service? Ask each provider these questions.
- Which numbers do you report?Ask for LCP, INP and CLS on mobile, before and after, measured with PageSpeed Insights.
- Field data or lab data?A lab score of 100 is nice. The field data from real visitors is what Google uses.
- Which pages are covered? The homepage alone is too little. Your service pages and booking page bring the customers.
- What happens after updates?Ask who checks speed after new plugins, new content or a redesign.

Frequently asked questions
Good to know.
What is website speed optimization?
It is the work of making your pages load fast, respond quickly to taps and stay visually stable. Google measures this with three Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP and CLS.
What is a good page speed?
According to Google's web.dev, a page is good when the largest element shows within 2.5 seconds, taps respond within 200 milliseconds and layout shift stays at 0.1 or less.
Does page speed affect my Google ranking?
Yes, as one of many signals. Google states that Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems. Relevant content comes first, and a good page experience helps among comparable pages.
How do I test my website speed?
Use PageSpeed Insights at pagespeed.web.dev. Enter your URL, open the mobile tab and check the Core Web Vitals. Search Console shows the same data for all your pages together.
