3D website design adds depth and movement to a web page. A visitor sees an object from several sides, or watches a scene change while scrolling. The page reacts to the hand of the visitor.

A 3D website runs in the normal browser on a phone or a laptop. Visitors install nothing. Browsers draw 3D with WebGL, a built-in technique for graphics, often through the open source library three.js.

People search for it as website design 3D or as 3D web design. Both mean the same craft, and the goal stays the same as for any website: a visitor understands what you sell and takes the next step.

The term covers several techniques. These are the four we use most.

1. 3D objectsA model of a product, a car or a logo that the visitor sees in the round. It sits in the page like a photo, with depth and light.
2. Scroll-driven animationMovement tied to the scroll. Scroll down and the object turns or the scene moves on. Scroll up and it runs back.
3. Product turntablesA product on a turning platform, like in a showroom. The visitor sees front, side and back in one view.
4. Scroll filmsA short film in chapters that plays as the visitor scrolls. Each chapter tells one part of your story.

An interactive 3D website often combines two of these: one strong moment in the hero, the first screen of the page, and a calmer story below it.

2. Arno's Auto's, OssUsed car sales, with a turntable in the hero on which five stock cars rotate in turn.
3. KYK Catering, AmsterdamA scroll film that tells one evening in four chapters: 6:00 PM the table, 7:30 PM the kitchen, 8:30 PM at the table, 11:00 PM the party.
4. Het Koetshuis, RotterdamA wedding venue in a house from 1679. A scroll film in four chapters: arrival, reception, celebration and the evening.
5. Dennis Car Care, SpijkCar detailing. Three chapters, paint, interior and rim, that rinse clean while you scroll.
6. Skypalace, AmsterdamAn event venue. A hero that plays by itself as a fifteen-second montage, and a film in three chapters that runs along with the scroll.

3D earns its place when seeing is selling. A car, a kitchen, a machine, a piece of furniture: products people want to view from every side before they call.

It also helps when your service is an experience. A caterer, a wedding venue or an event hall sells an evening. A scroll film lets a visitor walk through that evening in a few scrolls.

Some visitors arrive in a hurry. Someone with a burst pipe wants a phone number. Someone checking opening hours wants one line of text. For them, speed and clarity win.

Pages with a lot of reading, such as a guide, a price page or legal terms, work best as calm text. Movement there pulls the eye away from the words.

1. Light modelsA 3D model is a file, like a photo. We simplify the shape and shrink the textures, the images wrapped around the model, until the file is small.

3. A still image for slow phonesA phone on a slow connection gets a sharp still image in place of the moving scene. The message stays the same and the page stays quick.
