The short answer
Ecommerce website cost in 2026: four blocks that make the total. Build, platform, payments and upkeep.
An online store costs more than a regular website, because it has more to do. It manages products and stock, takes payments, calculates shipping and tax, and sends order emails.
The total has four blocks. The build is a one-time cost. The platform fee, the payment fees and the upkeep return every month. A fair comparison counts all four.
The ranges on this page come from guides and pricing pages published for 2026, with the source named at each figure. Treat them as a market indication. Your own quote follows your catalog and your wishes.
United States
How much does an ecommerce website cost in the US?
How much does an ecommerce website cost when someone builds it for you? The US ecommerce agency OuterBox publishes build ranges per type of store for 2026. The agency WebFX gives a broader range for the same year.
| Type of store | Build cost (USD) | Source, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Starter store on a hosted platform, largely self-built | $500 to $5,000+, plus monthly platform fees | OuterBox |
| Small professional ecommerce site | $5,000 to $25,000+ | OuterBox |
| Custom store for a growing brand | $25,000 to $150,000+ | OuterBox |
| B2B, large catalog or integrated store | $75,000 to $250,000+ | OuterBox |
| Enterprise or fully custom commerce platform | $250,000 to $500,000+ | OuterBox |
| Ecommerce or large website, general range | $10,000 to $50,000+ | WebFX |
Most small businesses sit in the first two rows. The higher rows describe stores with thousands of products, wholesale pricing or links to stock and accounting systems.
OuterBox also notes that many paid Shopify themes cost $250 to $350. That amount buys the design file only. Setup, product entry and customization come on top.
United Kingdom
Online store cost in the UK: 2026 ranges in GBP.
For online store cost in the UK we use the comparison site ExpertSure, which marks its prices as verified in August 2026.
| Route | Market range (GBP) | Source, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Small store run yourself on Shopify | £228 to £600 per year in platform fees | ExpertSure |
| Freelancer-built store | £3,000 to £10,000 | ExpertSure |
| Specialist ecommerce agency | £5,000 to £35,000+ | ExpertSure |
| Custom WooCommerce build with 500+ products | £10,000 to £35,000 | ExpertSure |
| Complex custom project | £10,000 to £50,000+ | ExpertSure |
As with regular websites, London rates sit above regional rates in the same guide. Most UK agencies and platforms show prices before VAT, so check which figure you compare.

Platform types
Three kinds of ecommerce platform, three cost models.
The platform is the software your store runs on. Your choice sets the cost model for years, so it deserves a clear look before you ask for quotes.
- Hosted platformsShopify, BigCommerce, Wix and Squarespace rent you the store software and the hosting for a monthly fee. Low starting cost, fees that return forever, and features added through paid apps.
- Open-source softwareWooCommerce is a free store plugin for WordPress. The software has a zero license fee. You pay for hosting, paid extensions, and someone to build and maintain it.
- Custom-built storesA developer or agency writes the store for your business. Highest build cost, full freedom in design and checkout, and running costs you control.
There is a fourth group for large retailers: enterprise plans such as Shopify Plus. OuterBox lists Shopify Plus at $2,500 a month on a one-year term. Shopify's UK pricing page shows it from £1,800 a month.
Shopify plans
What Shopify costs per month in 2026.
Shopify is the reference point in most price talks, so here are the plan prices. US figures come from NerdWallet's 2026 Shopify pricing review. UK figures come from Shopify's own UK pricing page, read in October 2026.
| Plan | US, billed monthly / yearly | UK, billed monthly / yearly | UK online card rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 / $29 per month | £25 / £19 per month | 2% + 25p |
| Grow | $105 / $79 per month | £65 / £49 per month | 1.7% + 25p |
| Advanced | $399 / $299 per month | £344 / £259 per month | 1.5% + 25p |
In the US, NerdWallet lists the online card rate for standard cards at 2.9% plus 30 cents on Basic, 2.7% on Grow and 2.5% on Advanced.
Use another payment provider than Shopify Payments, and Shopify adds its own transaction fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. Platform prices change regularly, so check the pricing page on the day you decide.
Payment fees
Payment processing: the cost that grows with your sales.
Every card payment costs a percentage plus a fixed amount. This applies on every platform. Stripe, a widely used payment provider, charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful domestic card payment in the US.
A worked example for the US: you sell 100 orders a month at an average of $80. Each order costs $2.32 plus $0.30, so $2.62. That is $262 a month, or $3,144 a year.
The same sum for the UK on Shopify Basic: 100 orders a month at £60 each. Each order costs £1.20 plus 25p, so £1.45. That is £145 a month, or £1,740 a year.
In both examples the payment fees are several times the platform subscription. When you compare platforms, compare the card rate at your own order volume before anything else.
Price drivers
What drives ecommerce website development cost.
Ecommerce website development cost follows hours, just like any build. These are the things that add hours to a store.
- Number of products and variantsA handful of products is online quickly. A catalog with sizes, colors, bundles and filters takes far more work to structure and enter.
- Theme or custom designAn existing theme is the low-cost route. A custom design in your own brand costs more and sets your store apart from thousands on the same theme.
- IntegrationsPayment, shipping labels, stock, accounting and email marketing. Every link between systems takes build and test time.
- Product contentClear descriptions and good photos help customers choose. Someone has to write and shoot them for every product.
- Special selling modelsSubscriptions, wholesale prices, made-to-order products or several currencies each add logic to the checkout.
- Moving from an old storeProducts, customers, order history and the old page addresses have to move along, so your Google positions stay intact.
Head to head
Shopify vs custom cost: how the two models compare.
The shopify vs custom cost question is really a question of when you pay. Shopify spreads the cost over monthly fees. A custom build asks more at the start and less each month.
| Hosted platform such as Shopify | Custom-built store | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Low: a plan, a theme and your own time, or a freelancer for setup | Higher: a build of several thousand and up |
| Monthly | Plan fee plus paid apps for extra features | Hosting and maintenance |
| Per order | Card rate, plus a platform fee with an outside payment provider | Card rate of your payment provider |
| Design freedom | Within the theme and the platform's checkout | Full freedom, including the checkout |
| Speed | Depends on the theme and the number of apps | Depends on the quality of the code |
| Leaving | Products export, the design and apps stay behind | Depends on your contract: ask who owns the code |
A hosted platform suits a new store that wants to test demand with little money. A custom store suits a business with proven sales, where design, speed and a tailored checkout earn back the higher start.
Apps deserve a close look. Each paid app adds a monthly fee and extra code that the shopper's phone has to load. Ten apps can cost more per month than the plan itself.
Every month
Running costs of an online store.
Next to payment fees, a store has fixed monthly costs. On a hosted platform that is the plan plus apps. On WooCommerce, OuterBox puts hosting at $25 to $350 a month for most stores in 2026.
Paid WooCommerce extensions cost $29 to $299 a year each, according to the same guide. Count the ones you need: subscriptions, bookings, advanced shipping and invoicing are common examples.
For maintenance, ExpertSure puts UK retainers at £50 to £150 a month with a freelancer and £100 to £500 with an agency. A store needs this more than a brochure site, because a broken checkout stops your income.
Add a domain name at $12 to $50 a year in the US, per WebsiteSetup, or £10 to £15 in the UK, per ExpertSure, and a business email address.
The real total
Your first-year cost: two worked examples.
Add the build to twelve months of running costs and you see what the first year really takes. Both examples use 100 orders a month at $80 and the figures quoted above.
Example one, a self-built Shopify store in the US: Basic on yearly billing is $348. A paid theme is $300. Assume $50 a month for apps, so $600. Card fees are $3,144. Total: $4,392, plus your own hours.
Example two, a small professional WooCommerce store in the US: a build of $15,000, hosting at $50 a month, five extensions at $99 a year and the same $3,144 in card fees. Total for year one: $19,239.
In year two the second store costs $4,239, close to the first. The difference between the routes sits in the start: time and a template look on one side, money and a store built for your brand on the other.
Outside the build
Costs outside the website itself.
A store is a business, and several costs sit outside any web quote. Plan for them before you set your prices.
- Product photographySharp, consistent photos sell. Budget for a photographer or a simple studio setup of your own.
- Shipping and packagingCarrier rates, boxes and labels. Decide early whether shipping is free above a certain order value.
- ReturnsReturned goods cost shipping and handling. Write a clear return policy and include the cost in your margin.
- Tax setupUS sellers deal with sales tax rules per state, UK sellers with VAT. An accountant can set this up correctly once.
- MarketingA new store starts with zero visitors. Search optimization, ads and email all take budget or time.
- Customer serviceQuestions about orders arrive daily. A chatbot and clear order emails take a large share of that work.
Where to invest
Where your money earns the most in a store.
Three parts of a store decide most of the revenue. Spend there first. The first is speed on a phone. Shoppers browse on mobile data, and a product page that appears at once keeps them looking.
The second is the product page: clear photos, a price, delivery time, reviews and one obvious button. The third is the checkout. Every extra field and every surprise cost at the last step loses orders.
Follow-up is the fourth, and often forgotten. An email to a shopper who left a full cart, and a review request after delivery, bring in revenue from visitors you already paid to attract.
Compare fairly
How to compare ecommerce quotes.
Send every provider the same brief with your product count, variants, payment methods and shipping rules. Then compare the quotes on these points.
- DesignAn existing theme or a custom design in your brand?
- Product entryIs entering your products included, and for how many?
- Text and photosWho writes the product descriptions, and is search optimization part of it?
- IntegrationsWhich links are in the price: payment, shipping, stock, accounting? What does one more cost?
- Monthly costsPlatform, hosting, apps, maintenance and support, as one total per month.
- OwnershipWho owns the design, the code and the customer data, and how does a move work?
- Payment termsHow much is due before you have seen the store?
Timing
When to start small and when to invest.
Starting a new store with an untested product? Begin small. A hosted plan and a clean theme let you find out whether people buy, for a few hundred dollars or pounds in the first months.
Do you already sell, through a marketplace, a physical shop or an older store? Then you know your order volume and your margin. A professional build is an investment you can calculate against real numbers.
A simple rule of thumb: a store that lifts your conversion rate from 1 to 1.5 percent gives half as many orders again from the same visitors. Set that extra yearly margin next to the price gap between two quotes.
Plan the move early when you outgrow a platform. Moving a store with customers, order history and Google positions takes care, and it goes best in a quiet sales period.
Other countries
Canada, Australia and Ireland.
The four cost blocks apply everywhere. Platform plans and card rates are set per country, so open the pricing page of each platform and payment provider with your own country selected.
Build prices follow local rates. Use the US and UK tables as orientation and request three local quotes on the same brief. We leave exact ranges for these markets out, because we found fewer well-documented 2026 sources.
Delta Six

A percentage plus a fixed amount per card payment. Stripe charges 2.9% plus 30 cents for US domestic cards. Shopify's UK Basic plan lists 2% plus 25p for online card payments.
Is WooCommerce really free?
The core software is free. You pay for hosting, paid extensions, a theme or design, and the hours of whoever builds and maintains the store.
Which costs do store owners forget most often?
Product photography, product text, shipping and returns, tax setup and marketing. A new store starts with zero visitors, so reserve budget or time for search and ads.
How long does it take to build an online store?
A self-built store on a hosted platform can be live in days. Agency builds usually take several weeks to months, depending on catalog size and integrations. Delta Six goes live within two weeks after your yes.
