How much does a website cost in 2026?

How much does a website cost? In 2026, published price guides put a professionally built small business site at roughly $2,000 to $15,000 in the US and £1,500 to £15,000 in the UK, plus yearly running costs.

By Lennox de Wolff, founder of Delta Six · updated on

Key takeaways

  • Who builds the site decides most of the price: a website builder costs a monthly fee, a freelancer a few thousand, an agency several thousand to tens of thousands.
  • US guides for 2026 put a freelancer-built small business site at $2,000 to $7,600 and an agency build at $5,000 to $15,000, according to WebsiteSetup.
  • UK guides for 2026 put a freelancer project at £500 to £10,000 and an agency project at £3,000 to £30,000 and up, according to ExpertSure.
  • Running costs for domain, hosting and maintenance often outweigh the build price over three years, so add them to every quote.
  • All figures on this page are market indications from named sources. Delta Six builds your website free first and you pay nothing upfront.

The short answer

How much does a website cost in 2026? Three routes, three price levels.

Search for website prices and you see amounts from a few dollars a month to six figures. Both ends are real. The price depends on who builds the site, how many pages it has and what it has to do.

There are three routes. You build it yourself with a website builder. You hire a freelancer. Or you hire an agency. Each route has its own price level and its own trade-offs in time and quality.

The ranges below come from pricing guides published for 2026. We name the source with each figure. Treat every number as a market indication: your own quote depends on your brief.

United States

Website cost in the US: 2026 price ranges in USD.

Two widely cited US guides, from the agency WebFX and the review site WebsiteSetup, both updated their figures for 2026. Side by side they give this picture.

RouteMarket range (USD)Source, 2026
Website builder, do it yourself$17 to $500+ per monthWebFX
Website builder, first-year starting cost$200 to $800WebsiteSetup
Freelancer, typical small business site$2,000 to $7,600WebsiteSetup
Freelancer, all project sizes$500 to $10,000+WebFX
Agency, complete site$5,000 to $15,000WebsiteSetup
Agency, all project sizes$3,000 to $30,000+WebFX
Ecommerce or large website$10,000 to $50,000+WebFX

The two sources overlap and differ at the edges. That is normal for price guides. WebsiteSetup describes a typical small business site, while WebFX covers every project size from a one-page site to a large build.

WebsiteSetup also lists freelancer rates of $50 to $95 an hour. A small site of 40 to 80 hours of work lands exactly in its quoted project range.

United Kingdom

Website design cost in the UK: 2026 price ranges in GBP.

For the UK we use the website design cost guide from the comparison site ExpertSure, which marks its prices as verified in August 2026. It splits the market by who builds and where they are based.

RouteMarket range (GBP)Source, 2026

Mid-size agency£5,000 to £15,000ExpertSure
London full-service agency£8,000 to £30,000+ExpertSure

Location shows clearly in the UK figures. The same guide has London agencies starting from £8,000, where a regional agency starts from £3,000 for comparable work.

Freelancer day rates in the guide run from £200 to £350 for junior and mid-level work up to £400 to £550 for senior specialists. Most UK agencies quote prices before VAT, so check which figure you are comparing.

Price drivers

Why web design pricing differs so much.

Two quotes for what sounds like the same website can differ by a factor of five. Web design pricing follows hours, and these six things decide the hours.

  1. Template or custom designA template is a ready-made design you fill in. A custom design is drawn around your brand and your customers. Custom takes many more hours.
  2. Number of pagesEach service, project and location can get its own page. ExpertSure puts each additional page at about £200 to £500 with a UK agency.
  3. Who writes the textWriting is slow, skilled work. A quote with copywriting included is worth more than the same price where you deliver every word yourself.
  4. FeaturesOnline booking, a calculator, a chatbot, a member area or a shop. Every feature that helps your customer takes build time.
  5. Who builds itA freelancer, a small studio and a large agency each charge a different rate. A large share of the price gap sits here.
  6. Where they are basedRates in big cities sit well above regional rates, as the London figures show.

Route 1

How much does it cost to build a website yourself?

How much does it cost to build a website with a builder such as Wix, Squarespace or Shopify? You pay a monthly plan and invest your own evenings. WebFX puts builder plans at $17 to $500 and up per month in 2026.

WebsiteSetup estimates the starting cost at $200 to $800 for a builder and $95 to $180 for a self-built WordPress site, the free software that runs on your own hosting.

The real cost of this route is time. Count the hours for choosing a template, writing every page, finding photos and setting up forms. Then multiply by what an hour of your work earns in your business.

A builder suits a simple site you enjoy keeping up yourself. Expect a template look shared with many other sites, and check the plan limits for booking, payments and search settings before you start.

Route 2

Hiring a freelancer: what you get for the money.

A freelancer is one person who designs and builds, often on WordPress or a builder. US guides for 2026 put a typical small business site at $2,000 to $7,600. UK guides put a standard business site at £1,500 to £3,000.

For that money you usually get a customized template, five to ten pages, a contact form and a basic setup for search engines. Copywriting and photography are often quoted separately.

Freelancers vary widely in skill. Ask for three recent websites you can open on your phone, and ask who handles updates and questions after launch. One person means one calendar, so agree on a delivery date in writing.

Route 3

Hiring an agency: project, hourly or monthly pricing.

An agency brings a team: designer, developer, copywriter and someone for search. That explains the higher range of $5,000 to $15,000 in the US and £3,000 to £15,000 for regional and mid-size UK agencies.

Agencies charge in three ways. A fixed project price is the most common. Hourly billing appears on open-ended work. A monthly subscription spreads the build over a contract and bundles hosting and support.

With a subscription, read the term and the exit rules. Ask what you own when you stop: the domain, the text, the images and the design. With a project price, ask what one extra page or one later change costs.

Your situation

Website cost for small business: three common situations.

Website cost for small business depends mostly on what the site has to do. Here are three situations with the market ranges that go with them.

  1. An online business cardA few pages with services, photos and contact details. ExpertSure puts this at £500 to £1,500 with a UK freelancer. WebFX puts small professionally designed sites at $500 to $5,000 and up.
  2. A website that brings in inquiriesCustom design, a page per service, online booking and a base for search. This is agency territory: $5,000 to $15,000 in the US, £3,000 to £15,000 in the UK.
  3. A website with a shopProduct management, payment and shipping are added. WebFX puts ecommerce and large sites at $10,000 to $50,000 and up. Our ecommerce cost guide covers this in detail.

Most service businesses sit in the second group. The site has one job: turn a visitor who found you on Google into a call, a booking or a quote request.

Hidden items

Costs that quotes often leave out.

A quote covers what is written in it. These items are regularly missing, and together they can add a third or more to the bill.

  1. CopywritingText for every page, written for your customer and for search. Ask who writes it and how many pages are covered.
  2. Photography and videoStock photos are cheap and generic. A photographer for half a day gives you images of your own work and team.
  3. Logo and brandA website builds on your brand. If the logo, colors and typefaces still need work, that is a separate job.
  4. Search engine setupTitles, descriptions, redirects from your old pages and a Google Business Profile. Small tasks that protect the visitors you already have.
  5. Legal pages and cookie consentA privacy policy and a consent banner that fit the rules where your customers live, such as UK GDPR or US state privacy laws.
  6. Revision roundsAsk how many rounds of changes are included and what an extra round costs.

After launch

Website maintenance cost and other running costs.

Once the site is live, three costs return every year: the domain name, hosting, which is the server space your site lives on, and maintenance. Website maintenance cost covers updates, security, backups and small changes.

ItemUS market rangeUK market range
Domain name$12 to $50 per year (WebsiteSetup)£10 to £15 per year (ExpertSure)
Hosting$40 to $250 per year for shared or managed WordPress hosting (WebsiteSetup)£5 to £30 per month after a freelancer build, £20 to £100 after an agency build (ExpertSure)
Maintenance, self-managed$60 to $150 per year for WordPress, $220 to $700 for builders (WebsiteSetup)£10 to £30 per month for security and backups (ExpertSure)
Maintenance, professional retainer$3,600 to $50,000 per year across all site sizes (WebFX)£50 to £150 per month freelancer, £100 to £500 agency (ExpertSure)

The wide US retainer range reflects everything from a small brochure site to a large shop with a support team. For a small business site, ExpertSure's overall guide of £50 to £300 a month is a realistic planning figure.

Ask what the retainer includes. Updates and backups are the base. Content changes, new pages and search work are often billed by the hour on top.

The real total

What a website costs over three years.

Look past the amount on the quote. A site lasts about three to five years before a redesign, so add the running costs for that period. Here are two worked examples with figures from the ranges above.

A US example: a freelancer builds your site for $4,000. Hosting is $150 a year, the domain $15 a year and upkeep $100 a month. Over three years that is $4,000 plus $450 plus $45 plus $3,600: $8,095 in total.

A UK example: a freelancer build of £2,500, hosting at £15 a month, maintenance at £75 a month and a domain at £12 a year. Over three years: £2,500 plus £3,240 plus £36, a total of £5,776.

In both examples the running costs match or exceed the build price. Run every quote through the same sum. A higher build price with low monthly costs can be the cheaper offer.

Compare fairly

How to compare website quotes.

Ask at least three providers for a quote against the same written brief. Then lay the quotes side by side on these points.

  1. Pages and textHow many pages are included, and who writes them?
  2. DesignA customized template or a custom design? How many revision rounds?
  3. FeaturesWhich features are in the price: booking, forms, chatbot, calculator? What does a feature cost later?
  4. SearchIs the technical base for SEO included, and is there monthly work on your visibility after launch?
  5. Running costsHosting, domain, updates and support per month or per year, and the price of a small change.
  6. OwnershipWho owns the domain name, the text and the design, and how does a move to another provider work?
  7. Payment termsHow much is due before you see anything? A deposit of 30 to 50 percent upfront is common in the market.

Spend wisely

Where a low price works, and where it costs you.

A low price is fine for a site with a small job: a few pages that confirm you exist and show your phone number. A template and your own text will do.

Saving gets expensive when the site has to win customers. A slow page, a vague first screen or a missing booking option costs inquiries every week, and that loss stays invisible on any invoice.

A useful test: estimate what one new customer is worth to you. If the better website brings two extra customers a month, compare that yearly amount with the price gap between the quotes.

Other countries

Canada, Australia and Ireland.

The same three routes and the same price drivers apply in Canada, Australia and Ireland. Builder plans are priced per country, and freelancer and agency rates follow local wages.

We found fewer well-documented 2026 guides for these markets, so we leave exact ranges out. Use the US and UK tables as orientation, then request three local quotes on the same brief.

Delta Six

The Delta Six route: pay nothing upfront, see the complete website first.

Most providers ask for a deposit before you have seen a single screen. We turned that around. We build your complete custom website first, at our own expense, and show it in a 15-minute online showcase.

You only pay when you're happy. Choose us and your website is live within two weeks. Two months after launch you choose again: stop after two improvement rounds and you get your money back.

  1. Premium 3D design in your own brandDesigned for desktop and phone.
  2. Online bookingConnected to your calendar, so every appointment appears there right away.
  3. An AI chatbotAnswers visitors' questions, evenings and weekends included.
  4. A lead magnet for your tradeA check, quiz or calculator that gives visitors an easy first step.
  5. Follow-up by email and WhatsAppEvery inquiry gets an automatic follow-up, and customers are asked for a review.
  6. Monthly SEO and AI search optimizationOngoing work on your visibility in Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews.

We discuss our price in the showcase, after you have seen your own website. That way you judge a finished product, and the risk of the build sits with us.

Checklist

Work through this chapter. Point by point.

  • Write a one-page brief: goal of the site, number of pages, features and deadline.
  • Decide which route fits: website builder, freelancer or agency.
  • Request at least three quotes against the same brief.
  • Check per quote how many pages are included and who writes the text.
  • Ask whether the design is a customized template or custom work, and how many revision rounds you get.
  • List the features in the price and ask what an extra feature costs later.
  • Ask for the yearly cost of domain, hosting and maintenance in writing.
  • Add up build price plus three years of running costs for every quote.
  • Confirm in writing that you own the domain name, the text and the images.
  • Ask how much is due upfront and what happens if you are unhappy with the result.
  • Open three recent sites of each provider on your phone and test the speed with PageSpeed Insights.
  • Estimate the value of one new customer and compare it with the price gap between quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know.

How much does a website cost for a small business?

Published 2026 guides put a professionally built small business site at about $2,000 to $15,000 in the US and £1,500 to £15,000 in the UK. A freelancer sits at the lower end, an agency at the higher end.

How much does it cost to build a website yourself?

With a website builder you pay a monthly plan, from about $17 a month according to WebFX. WebsiteSetup estimates $200 to $800 in starting costs. Add the value of your own hours.

How much does website maintenance cost?

UK guides put maintenance at £50 to £150 a month with a freelancer and £100 to £500 with an agency. Self-managed upkeep of a WordPress site costs $60 to $150 a year according to WebsiteSetup.

Why do website quotes differ so much?

Price follows hours. A custom design, more pages, professional copywriting and features such as booking all add hours. Hourly rates also differ between freelancers, regional agencies and big-city agencies.

Is a cheap website worth it?

For a simple online business card, yes. When the site has to win customers, a slow or unclear site costs inquiries every week. Compare the price gap with the value of the extra customers.

How much do agencies ask upfront?

A deposit of 30 to 50 percent before work starts is common in the market. Delta Six works differently: we build the complete website first and you pay nothing upfront.

What does a website from Delta Six cost?

You pay nothing upfront. We build your complete custom website free first and show it in a 15-minute online showcase. We discuss the price there, after you have seen your own website.

How long does a website last before a redesign?

Many businesses redesign every three to five years, when the brand, the services or the technology have moved on. Include that period when you calculate the total cost of a quote.
